Stones Have Bridge, Um, LP They Want To Sell You Classic English rockers (pictured) recruit Dust Brothers on production and Pumpkins as tour openers. NEW YORK -- It was big and colorful and packed with all the hype, pomp and promotion you could imagine from a group of aging classic rockers. In short, it was pure '90s Stones. The summer rainstorm cleared and the tranquil waters of the Hudson seemed becalmed Monday morning. But not everything was tranquil at the usually deserted corner of New Dock and River, with a view of the Twin Towers, on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge. The shop owners and beat police of the area were not used to the likes of the pandemonium building below the world famous span. The Rolling Stones, one of the oldest (literally) and most persistent rock acts known to man, were about to claim the area for the latest in their long tradition of New York City-based press conferences to announce a massive tour -- including shows in small and large clubs -- to support their upcoming album Bridges To Babylon (Sept. 30, produced by Don Was on Virgin), their first since 1994's Voodoo Lounge Tour. In true Stonesian fashion, frontman Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, along with rhythm maestro Ron Wood and backbeater Charlie Watts, made their grander than grand entrance driving with a police escort from Manhattan to Brooklyn over the bridge in a bright red 1955 Cadillac convertible -- Jagger at the wheel, of course.

R. Flack reports :The Rolling Stones will release a new album, Bridges To Babylon, and embark on a U. S. tour in late September. The album is expected to include 12 songs and features the work of producers Don Was (Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan), the Dust Brothers (Beck, Beastie Boys) and Danny Saber (Black Grape), as well as the Glimmer Twins (that would be Stones' Mick Jagger and Keith Richards). Despite varied production approaches, Bridges To Babylon is said to still sound like a Rolling Stones album. Of the 12 tracks currently set to be included on the album, three--" Anybody Seen My Baby," "Might As Well Get Juiced" and "Saint of Me"--were produced by the Dust Brothers while Saber was behind the board for "Gunface." Some of the other song tiles: "Already Over Me," "Always Suffering" and "Low Down." The album was recorded at a number of studios including Don Was' favorite, Oceanway (located in Hollywood), and the Dust Brothers Silver Lake district home studio. In addition to Jagger, Richards, guitarist Ron Wood and drummer Charlie Watts, musicians lending a hand included Was (who played bass on at least one track), keyboardists Billy Preston and Heartbreaker Benmont Tench, session drummer Jim Keltner, sax man Wayne Shorter and bassist Me'Shell Ndegeocello. As for the group's world tour, it is currently set to kick off at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sept. 23, will last a year, and will feature another mind-blowing stage set.
